Bella Quirin of poptastic duo Babes In Love tells CPWM Mag all about the band’s origin story…
HOW DID YOU MEET? WHAT WAS THE INTENTION BEHIND STARTING THIS PROJECT?
We met kind of randomly. Benny worked next door to where my ex worked, we then got chatting and realised we had similar music interests and mutual friends. It all happened quite naturally! Benny then asked me to sing on something they had made and we realised we had something special and had to do more.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING THING ABOUT MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER THUS FAR?
I would say just the result of a great tune; being able to just bounce ideas off each other and see that we can create something great out of it.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO IN LEEDS WHEN NOT WORKING AS A DUO?
We love Leeds and we both agree that the city has so much to offer musically. We're both DJs so we play out and around Leeds quite a lot, but we also love going to club nights and supporting friends in local bands. Benny is a producer so is working with lots of our friends at the mo to make some really great music. We are really spoilt for not only choice in Leeds, but peer support! SO much talent. It's a blessed city for that really I'm also in a couple of other projects at the mo (Tiss Vampiric, BOSSdaddy band), and have recently played at Leeds producer forum which is such a nice space generally. We both can't seem to stay away from music!
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH COME PLAY WITH ME? HOW HAVE THEY HELPED SO FAR?
We sent a song across for the comp and got it! It is a great opportunity for us! It's really cool that they have been able to pitch our song for playlists and stuff like that, it has been a real eye-opener for us!
WHAT IS 'WITH ME?' ALL ABOUT? WHAT INSPIRED THE SINGLE?
It's about that flakey friend! We all have one, and I feel like we can both be that friend too sometimes. It's about the struggle of trying to just spend that quality time together. We wanted to do something a bit slower than our usual deal, and really sit back on our heels with this one. What came of it was this song which has a real nonchalance about it, even though it's essentially saying 'Please come hang out with me!'
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR THE FORTHCOMING YEAR?
We have been super busy with life, but we are finally back doing some gigs. It's going to be so exciting to play our music out and about — we've only ever done one live show together as Babes In Love, so we are both excited to see what form it takes and where it goes.
